Delft Flower Pyramid - Πυραμίδα Λουλουδιών Ντελφτ

Last year, as a response to the renovation of the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands, ceramic manufacturers Royal Tichelaar Makkum proposed a project titled Pyramids of Makkum in which four prominent designers participated. The designers were asked to reinterpret a 17th century flower pyramid from a contemporary perspective. Although understanding the theory and motivation behind the resulting interpretations, I wasn’t at all taken by them, but I was struck by the original show-piece. It is a sensational display of Delft ceramics and dressed in flowers they are breathtaking. The original flower pyramids were made between 1690 and 1720. They can measure up to 1.6 metres tall and are made up of multiple loose dishes that are held in place in the centre with a wooden stick, not unlike the way the drums of the columns of the Parthenon were held together. Separate dishes allowed the flowers to have their own supply of water but were also designed this way for manufacturing convenience. Creating a mould for an object this large with such a complicated function was impossible at the time. 

The surface decoration is always elaborate and as with all Delftware, a great deal of skill goes into its making. Both the original flower pyramids and the designers’ interpretations were made with a ceramic technique called faience. You can read more about the process here. These works were heavily influenced by Oriental art and crafts which was extremely popular at the time and instrumental to the birth and development of Delftware.

Πέρσι, ως αντίδραση στην ανακαίνιση του Ριξμουσέουμ στην Ολλανδία, οι κατασκευαστές κεραμεικών Ρόυαλ Τικλάρ Μάκουμ πρότειναν ένα έργο με τίτλο Πυραμίδες του Μακούμ στο οποίο συμμετείχαν 4 διαπρεπείς σχεδιαστές. Οι σχεδιαστές ρωτήθηκαν να επανερμηνεύσουν μία πυραμίδα λουλουδιών του 17ου αιώνα από μία σύγχρονη προοπτική. Αν και καταλαβαίνω τη θεωρία και το κίνητρο πίσω από τις επακόλουθες ερμηνείες, δεν με ενθουσιάσαν καθόλου, αλλά κεραυνοβολήθηκα από το αυθεντικό κομάτι της έκθεσης. Είναι ένα συνταρακτικό έκθεμα κεραμεικών Ντελφτ και ντυμένο με λουλούδια σου παίρνει την ανάσα. Οι αυθεντικές πυραμίδες φτιάχτηκαν μεταξύ του 1690 και 1720. Φτάνουν τα 1.6 μέτρα ύψος και είναι φτιαγμένες από πολλαπλά σκεύη που συγκρατούνται μεταξύ τους με μία ξύλινη ράβδο, όχι και πολύ διαφορετικά από τους σπονδύλους των κιόνων του Παρθενώνα. Πολλαπλά σκεύη επιτρέπυν τα λουλούδια να έχουν τη δική τους τροφοδοσία νερού αλλά ήταν κι έτσι σχεδιασμένα για διευκόλυνση στη κατασκευή. Η δημιουργία ενός τόσο μεγάλου καλουπιού ήταν αδύνατη εκείνη την εποχή.

Η διακόσμηση της επιφάνειας είναι πάντα περίτεχνη και όπως όλα τα είδη Ντελφτ, έχει φτιαχτεί με μεγάλη επιδεξιότητα. Και οι αυθεντικλες πυραμίδες λουλουδιών αλλά και οι επανερμηνείες των σχεδιαστών φτιάχτηκαν με μία τεχνική της κεραμεικής που ονομάζεται φαγέντσα. Αυτά τα έργα ήταν βαρύτατα επηρεασμένα από Ανατολικές τέχνες οι οποίες ήταν εξαιρετικά δημοφιλή εκείνη την εποχή παίζοντας συντελεστικό ρόλο στην γέννηση κι ανάπτυξη των κεραμεικών Ντελφτ.
